About Rome City

Rome City is the largest community in Orange Township, Noble County, and encompasses Sylvan Lake. With a shoreline of 16 miles and covering 640 acres, it is the largest lake in Noble County.

Sylvan Lake was formed when a dam was constructed across a tributary of the Elkhart River as part of a proposed ship canal from Michigan City to Fort Wayne. The Town of Rome City and the Sylvan Lake Improvement Association have worked together on several projects to continue to improve the region as a whole.

Rome City is also the home of the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site, which lies nestled on the shoreline of Sylvan Lake. It is the former home of Gene Stratton-Porter, one of Indiana's most widely read authors and one of the world's first nature photographers.

As of the 2010 US Census, there are 1,361 people living in Rome City.
